Legion of Mary

Welcome to the Legion of Mary - Thurgoona

In 1998 when the Thurgoona Parish was opened under the title of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, it was the Legion of Mary devotion that was established almost at the same time.
As a pioneering parish there was work to be done to raise funds to build our church in honour of Our Lady. The Parish Council agreed to raffle a Prime Mover Kenworth Truck valued at $300,000. This was a huge task to undertake.
The Legion of Mary was to play a major role in this Raffle if it was to succeed. We needed, as in all things, to seek Our Lady’s help and in doing so, the Legion of Mary approached Praesidium’s throughout Australia with a ‘tick the boxes sheet’ requesting Rosaries.
Not only the praesidium’s, but people responded to this call, they wanted to be part of a new developing Marian parish. The boxes were ticked, and sheets returned.
Much to the joy and amazement, there were 17,500 Hail Mary’s recited. Our Blessed Mother not only heard our plea but granted us the means to build a beautiful church.
Today, 25 years later the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish is thriving with new people and the pioneering members who are still with us.
The Legion of Mary now has two praesidium’s, Mary Immaculate and Mystical Rose who meet weekly at the Marian Centre. New members are always welcome to join the Legion in their evangelising work in the Parish.

“Then he will pour forth words of wisdom … and give thanks to the Lord in prayer. The Lord will direct his counsel and his knowledge as he meditates upon the mysteries of God”. – Sir 39:6
The Hail Mary said Well is the force that puts the devil to flight. It is the sanctification of the soul, the joy of Angels, the melody of the Elect, the canticle of the New Testament, the delight of Mary, and the glory of the Holy Trinity.  – St. Louis Grignion de Montfort.
